Girl Online by Zoe Sugg (Zoella)

Hello everyone and welcome back to A Blog Full of Books. I've been an avid fan of Zoe Sugg (aka Zoella) on YouTube for a few years now so you can imagine my excitement when I got my hands on her first young adult fiction book: Girl Online. And I must say I enjoyed it more than I originally thought I would. It was funny, smart, original, and an all-around, feel-good book.

So let's dive into the review, shall we >>>>>

The Characters
Girl Online is the story of Penny Porter, your average, British teen battling anxiety and the struggles of every day, high school life. She has loving parents, an awesome big brother, the best Best Friend in the world named Elliot, and a blog. No one (other than Elliot, of course) knows about her blog, which is called Girl Online, and through this blog Penny shares her deepest, secret thoughts with the world anonymously . . . or so she thinks. There's also a really cute named Noah but we'll get to him in a few moments.

I found Penny to be really relatable and even entertaining at times. She has her clumsy moments and her times when she says the wrong thing but in the end she turns out to be a pretty strong female lead. When I read a book it takes me a little time to figure out whether or not I'm going to enjoy reading it from the main character's point of view. But I can honestly say after the first 2 chapters I found sympathizing for Penny, laughing with Penny, and even crying with her. And by the end of the book I was cheering for her all the way.

As for Elliot - all I can say is I wish I had a friend as cool and stylish as him. His storyline alone was interesting enough on it's own that I would've totally read a book about him and his family struggles. But anyway, Elliot's the type of friend everyone wants and everyone needs to become - someone who will always have your back.

Noah. Well, let's just say he's your quintessential cute boy with a guitar who turns out to be a lot more than what meets the eye. I'm really excited to see how his character develops over the series.

The Conflict

The conflict of this story is easy enough to understand. Fleeing a very embarrassing situation and helping her mom plan an elaborate Downton Abbey-themed wedding, Penny, Elliot, and her parents fly to New York City. While there she meets Noah, who she mistakes for the wedding singer. Turns out Noah not your ordinary Brooklyn Boy; he's got a secret that'll change both his and Penny's lives forever. Will Penny be able to handle the changes? Will she ever get her anxiety under control? You'll just have to pick up a copy and read to find out.

The bottom line - this book was like a teen chick-flick (which I love) because it was so light-hearted. But it also dealt with real issues like anxiety and running away from home. I was reminded of my 15 year old self when I read it and I think that if you're interested in a entertaining yet touching story you should definitely check out Girl Online.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars. Cheers, Zoe.

Until next time . . .

XOXO,

Nellie
